TEMPTIME FROM THE CREATION

A disastrous situation arose in the late 1970's, when children vaccinated against poliomyelitis (polio) in Sudan were found to have contracted the disease a few years later. A World Health Organization (WHO) inquiry found that the original vaccine quality was suitable but, heat exposure during routine vaccination made the product inactive. From this event and other reports from the field of similar heat damaged vaccines, the time-temperature indicator concept was conceived to meet WHO and PATH requests. TEMPTIME was born (formerly Lifelines Technology).

Long years of scientific and technical research, along with major financial investments, were required to validate the underlying technology, which responded to a triple challenge:

  • Mastering the polymerization reaction, which follows the Arrhenius equation, in order to manufacture an indicator formulated according to customer needs.
  • Commercialization in order to ensure the indicator reliability and reproducibility
  • Miniaturization of the technology so that the finished product could be affixed as an adhesive label to each vial, ampoule, syringe, et.al.

TEMPTIME has developed credibility in the difficult and demanding world of the health industry:

  • Proof of a credible technology
  • Proven reliability indicators
  • Sound scientific backing behind industrial operations worldwide, in the difficult and demanding environment of pharmaceuticals, with clients such as Glaxo, Sanofi Pasteur, Novartis, and all the world's major vaccine manufacturers.
The first indicators were supplied on polio vaccines vials for Pasteur Merieux Connaught (now Sanofi Pasteur), SmithKline Beecham (now Glaxo) and Biocini (now Novartis Vaccine) in 1996. WHO decided that the system should be extended to all orally administered polio vaccines in 1998. Given the objective benefits of the indicators to worldwide vaccination campaigns, WHO and UNICEF then decided, in 2000, on a full-scale extension of the indicators to all vaccines.
